Purpose Statement
The job of Library Clerk is done for the purpose/s of performing clerical duties in the library including but
not limited to processing new library materials; maintaining the circulation desk and records, shelving
books, and producing overdue notices.
Essential Functions
Answers phone calls for the purpose of providing information and assistance to teachers, parents, and
administrators.
Assists staff and students for the purpose of locating desired and requested library books and textbook
resource materials: using library software (Destiny), online resources and the Internet: explaining library
procedures, scheduling classes to use the library and conducting setup for meetings held in the library.
Conducts inventory of library and media materials for the purpose of discarding worn or obsolete
materials and repairing damaged materials, providing a more current copyright dated collection.
Maintains records of overdue materials for the purpose of sending notices to students, parents, and
teachers; collects fees for damaged or lost books and generates monthly circulation statistics.
Maintains and runs the circulation desk for the purpose of library efficiency and organization; checking
in/out library and textbook materials to patrons.
Meets periodically with school administration for the purpose of discussing library goals, selecting library
materials, and or reviewing opening/closing procedures.
Monitors student activity for the purpose of maintaining acceptable behavior.
Operates computers and library software for the purpose of cataloging and processing professional
library materials, new books, magazines, audiovisual materials, and other instructional materials in the
library collection; searches computer database for book reviews, and creates marc records accepted by
library standards.
Operates, maintains, and supervises the library media center for the purpose of providing ongoing library
education and access to students and staff.
Participates in meetings, in-service training, workshops, etc. as required for the purpose of conveying
and/or gathering information required to perform job functions.
Participates in special projects and community functions (e.g. book fairs and/or author visits, etc.) for the
purpose of promoting the use and enjoyment of literature.
Reads stories aloud to students for the purpose of providing a positive and educational library
experience.
Receives, packs/unpacks boxes of books and other instructional materials for the purpose of inspecting,
loading, and unloading incoming and outgoing shipments and transferring and receiving materials
to/from another site.
Re-shelves returned books and other materials in a timely manner for the purpose of library efficiency
and organization, providing a functional and attractive Library Media Center.

Other Functions
Performs other duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of
the work unit.
Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
SKILLS are required to perform multiple tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in order to meet changing
job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include:
performing standard bookkeeping preparing and maintaining accurate records adhering to safety practices using
pertinent software applications operating standard office equipment.
KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; read
and follow instructions; and understand multi-step written and oral instructions. Specific knowledge based
competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: age appropriate activities, business
telephone etiquette, safety practices and procedures; and common instructional media equipment and/or software.
ABILITY is required to schedule activities, meetings, and/or events; gather, collate, and/or classify data; and consider
a number of factors when using equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a wide variety of
circumstances; work with data utilizing specific, defined processes; and operate equipment using standardized
methods. Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with a variety of data; and
utilize specific, job-related equipment. Problem solving with data requires following prescribed guidelines; and
problem solving with equipment is moderate. Specific ability based competencies required to satisfactorily perform
the functions of the job include: displaying mechanical aptitude establishing and maintaining effective working
relationships working with constant interruptions communicating with diverse groups displaying tact and courtesy
maintaining confidentiality working as part of a team setting priorities meeting deadlines and schedules adapting to
changing work priorities.
Responsibility
Responsibilities include: working under direct supervision using standardized procedures; providing information
and/or advising others; operating within a defined budget. Utilization of some resources from other work units is often
required to perform the job's functions. .
Work Environment
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands:
significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some climbing and balancing, frequent stooping, kneeling,
crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 25% sitting, 37% walking,
and 38% standing. This job is performed in a generally clean and healthy environment.
