The City of Avondale is accepting applications for the position of Library Assistant. This is a full-time position, FLSA non-exempt with benefits.

The Library Assistant position assists patrons with information about library materials, equipment, programs, and services. This position provides assistance in person, online, and over the phone. The Library Assistant also works in library material circulation, provides computer and printer assistance, and works to ensure that library technology is functioning. The Library Assistant also addresses patron behavior issues in the library and may need to directly resolve disputes, enforce policies and handle difficult situations with patrons.
Essential Functions
Educates, trains, and assists patrons in the use of library technology, equipment and resources, principally PCs and peripherals.
Assists patrons with check-in and check-out and with locating materials at a branch or within the Avondale Library System.
Resolves problems with patron's account and record. May perform other duties related to circulation.
Assists staff and patrons with the scheduling and use of facility meeting room and study rooms.
Provides information assistance and readers' advisory assistance in person, online, or over the phone, including use of library resources, equipment, and programming.
Assists patrons in the use of library collections through reference interviews, literature and online searches. Refers questions to a librarian, as necessary.
Resolves patron incidents, problems, concerns, and conflicts ensuring that policies are followed or redirects to appropriate colleague.
Provides assistance with and delivers library programs, as assigned.
Performs cash handling and balancing of cash drawer at end of shift.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements
High school diploma or equivalency.
Customer service skills acquired through one (1) year of job-related experience. Two (2) years of computer experience and/or training.
Supplemental Information
Work requires the ability to read the public library catalog, manuals, Dewey decimal classifications, book reviews, order forms and computer screens.
Work requires the ability to perform general math calculations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
Work requires the ability to write notes on patrons records and changes to the technical manual.
Planning responsibilities include work loads and leases.
Work requires the occasional direction of helpers, assistants, seasonal employees, interns, volunteers or temporary employees.
Work is governed by broad instructions, objectives, and policies. Work requires the exercise of considerable initiative and independent analytical and evaluative judgment.
The incumbents in this position contact others within the organization. These contacts may involve similar work units or departments within the City such as Parks and Recreation and Employee Connection which may be involved in decision making or providing approval or decision making authority for purchases or projects. In addition, these incumbents work with individuals outside the City who may belong to professional or peer organizations. Working with various state and federal agencies may also be required of the employee. Vendors and suppliers may also be called upon for information on purchases, supplies or products. Meetings and discussions may be conducted with customers, brokers and sales representatives. Employee must maintain regular attendance. Ability to work in a constant state of alertness and safe manner.
