Under immediate supervision, processes inmates into and releases inmates from the Polk County Jail.
Illustrative Examples of Work
Interviews, verifies, and inputs arrested persons’ information for booking and release following established standard procedures.
Processes numerous court orders and other legal and booking documents; assures accurate information is recorded and distributed to appropriate persons.
Provides inmates’ data to attorneys, clerks, judges, and the general public in accordance with Iowa Code and departmental procedures.
Receives and reviews Iowa Courts online information, EDMS accounts, and other approved systems which contains court information from the State of Iowa.
Answers incoming telephone calls, types, files, maintains accurate and complete records, and prepares statistical reports; reviews written communications and correspondence for accuracy.
Monitors security cameras as needed.
Performs related duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of the policies and standard operating procedures of the Polk County Jail.
Knowledge of the constitutional rights of incarcerated persons.
Knowledge of the confidentiality requirements of the Iowa Code and the Sheriff's Office relating to information regarding the medical, personal and/or criminal history of jail inmates.
Knowledge of court procedures.
Knowledge of general office practices and techniques.
Knowledge of business English and spelling.
Skill in proofreading.
Ability to type 35 words per minute and/or possess data entry skills of 5,000 keystrokes per hour with a 5% or less error rate.
Ability to operate a personal computer and other general office equipment.
Ability to establish and maintain satisfactory working relationships with attorneys, judges, other County employees, law enforcement personnel, and the general public using courtesy, patience, tact, and sensitivity to volatile situations.
Ability to make minor decisions in accordance with laws, rules, regulations, and departmental policies and procedures.
Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations.
Ability to file and maintain accurate and complete office records and prepare reports.
Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
Training and Experience
Graduation from high school or equivalent education, and
One year of related clerical experience, or
Any equivalent combination of training and experience that will have provided the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
IOWA (Iowa On-Line Warrants and Articles)/NCIC (National Crime Information Center) certification is required within six months of hire.
A criminal background check is required.
A drug screen is required prior to final offer of employment.
A data entry and keyboard testing is required.
